What Is Klondike Solitaire

Klondike is the world's best-known single-player card game. You build down in the tableau columns, flip hidden cards face up, and gradually move every card to the four foundations, sorted by suit from ace to king.

How to Play Klondike

The goal is to move all cards to the four foundations, building each suit up from ace to king. In the tableau, cards are stacked in descending order with alternating colors: black on red and red on black.

  • This page uses draw-one mode: one card is turned over from the stock at a time.
  • An empty column can only be filled with a king, or with a valid sequence that starts with a king.
  • Clicking an eligible card tries to send it to a foundation automatically.
  • When the top face-down card in a column is uncovered, it flips over automatically.

Core Rules of Classic Klondike

The standard deal has seven tableau columns. The first column holds one card, the second two, and so on — only the bottom card of each column starts face up. The rest of the deck sits in the stock, and drawn cards land in the waste.

Tableau cards are placed in descending order with alternating colors. Foundations are built strictly by suit in ascending order. You can move a single card between columns, or an entire valid sequence at once.

Why Klondike Is So Engaging

Klondike blends the luck of the initial deal with the logic of every decision that follows. It stays popular because each game starts in seconds, yet rewards careful thinking about which cards to uncover first, how to handle empty columns, and when to move cards to the foundations.

Klondike remains one of the most recognizable solo card games: it's easy to pick up, and every deal quickly draws you in with its mix of simple rules and tactical choices.

Klondike FAQ

How do you play Klondike?

Build the foundations up by suit from ace to king, while stacking tableau cards in descending order, alternating red and black suits.

Can I play Klondike for free?

Yes. The game on this page runs right in your browser — free, no sign-up, no download, no strings attached.

What's the difference between draw one and draw three?

In draw-one mode, a single card is turned over from the stock, which makes it easier to track the layout and plan ahead. In draw-three mode, three cards are drawn at once, which usually makes Klondike harder.

How do you win at Klondike?

Uncover hidden cards early, don't waste an empty column on the wrong king, and don't rush cards to the foundations if you still need them to rearrange the tableau.

Can I play Klondike on my phone?

Yes. The board is touch-friendly, and you can switch the card size in the toolbar above the layout.
