What the starting deal looks like
FreeCell uses one standard deck of 52 cards. They are dealt straight into eight tableau columns, and every card is face up from the very first move. That is FreeCell's key difference from Klondike: the player sees the entire layout from the start and can plan ahead without waiting for hidden cards to be revealed.
Besides the eight columns there are four free cells and four foundations. The free cells let you temporarily set a card aside to free up a needed chain or rearrange a column. The foundations are built by suit from ace to king and are the final goal of the game.
